Nick Nolte- Clay Banning

Gerard Butler is back as CIA agent Mike Banning and tasked to save a new President in the new action flick “Angel has Fallen”

Mike Banning, CIA agent in charge of the presidential detail and goes by code name “Guardian Angel”. Banning is battling age, migraines and dizzy spells the side effects of his past on the job. We join Mike trapped in a building surrounded by gun men, turns out it is a training run at his friend Wade Jennings special forces training center. Jennings explained to Mike he was forced to open the facility when work for mercenaries dried up under the new President Trumbull. Banning told Wade he would put in a word with the CIA to possibly have the agents train there.

President Trumbull takes some time away fishing outside DC. The lake is surrounded by agents and Banning is on the boat with the president. Trumbull asks Banning if he is willing to take the position of head of the CIA. Banning agrees but wants to discuss it with his wife Leah (Piper Perabo). Banning has a migraine attack noticed by the president and asks to be relieved. As Banning boats back to shore with Agent Murphy now guarding the President, he see a large group of flying objects that turn out to be drones that attack all the agents and secret service details killing all of them and a few are heading for Trumbull’s boat. Murph throws the President in the lake and Banning is speeding back to Trumbull’s boat. As Mike arrives Murphy and the boat explode and Banning dives in the water to make sure the president survives.

The President arrives at the hospital in a coma and Banning wakes up to find himself handcuffed to his hospital bed. Vice President Kirby (Tim Blake Nelson) is sworn in as acting President and Banning is questioned by FBI agent Thompson (Jada Pinkett Smith) and charged with the attack on his fellow agents and attempted assassination of the President Trumbull.

Mike is being set up, but by who? The same mysterious attacker from the lake comes to take out the guards transporting Banning to jail, allowing him to escape and take out the mercenaries that just sprung him. One of these bad guys looks familiar, he was the guy Banning threw down the stairs at the training facility. Mie begins to put things together and knows he has to regroup and find a place to rest off the grid. Banning goes deep into the woods and finds his estranged father Clay (Nick Nolte) and explains why he is there and needs help.

It takes less than 24 hours for the mercenaries to locate Banning and he and his pop have to use his escape tunnels to get out past the soldiers. Mike starts to run out to start killing the enemy, when his dad says “sit down” and starts pulling detonators blowing up the bad guys in numerous balls of fiery explosions. This was spectacular. Now the Banning boys must go back and save the President, Banning’s family and the remaining secret service agent from a final attack from Jennings mercs!

Every three years Gerard Butler shows up in a movie blowing up things, killing hundreds of bad guys and saving the world in a “Fallen” film. Olympus has fallen was a good film, but it should have stopped there and not gone across the pond (London Has Fallen) and now back to DC with Angel Has Fallen. The film was not all bad, the drone attack was one of the coolest parts of the film. Also Nick Nolte as Clay Banning and off the grid recluse that looks scarily like the unibomber, is great as comic relief with Butler and blowing up half the state with more explosive than they use in a Michael Bay film!

But unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good in Angel has fallen. Its not a surprise that Butler is the one framed for the crimes and Danny Huston is the bad guy. Angel is completely predictable and at times boring. At the end of the film you will be left with more questions than answers…like why not use the drones that worked so well at the lake to take out the president in the hospital? (Spoiler) What happened to Jenning’s Asian hacker, was he arrested?

I am jealous of Morgan Freeman as President Trumbull who slept through ½ of this bad film…Lucky!

I’m Karl the Flick Fanatic hope the next thing to fall for Butler is the box office totals so we don’t see another “Fallen” film in three years.
