The House with A Clock in Its Walls

Jack Black- Jonathan Barnavelt

Cate Blanchett- Florence Zimmerman

Owen Vaccaro- Lewis Barnavelt

Kyle McLachlan- Issac Izard

Jack Black is back as a crazy wizard raising his nephew in a magical house in the new kids’ comedy “The House with a Clock in its Walls”.

Lewis Barnavelt is an orphan after his parents were killed in a car accident forcing him to go live with his sole surviving relative Uncle Jonathan Barnavelt. Jonathan is the black swan of the family and explains to Lewis there is only one rule, “Don’t open the cabinet in the library”. Johnathan house is loaded with clocks and resembles a haunted house. Lewis wakes in the middle of the night to find his uncle searching the house for something “secret”.

Lewis makes a friend at school, Tarby Corrigan (Sunny Suljic) who tells him the guy that lives there is an axe murderer and the place is haunted.  That night as Lewis followed his uncle though the house he saw him taking an axe to the wall of the house! Lewis freaks out and grabs his stuff and runs for the door! Before he can escape, Lewis is stopped by the HOUSE!

Jonathan Barnavelt is a wizard and his house is magical! Uncle Johnathan explains it all to his nephew and agrees to train him as a magician. Jonathan introduces Lewis to his best friend Florence, a cookie pushing witch that lives next door. Jonathan and Florence explain to Lewis that there is a clock hidden in the walls of the house by Issac Izard, the original owner, also a wizard and Jonathan’s former partner.

Issac was a great wizard but was sent off to world war II and came back a different person…. darker and practicing dark magic. Issac killed his wife Selena (Renee Elise Goldsberry) and himself performing ritual that planted the clock in the walls of the house. Jonathan told Lewis that is why he has all the clocks to drown out the ticking of that mysterious clock. Jonathan also made a discovery that the clock is counting down to something?

Lewis picks up on magic quickly and is aided by the magical chair and a lion topiary in the house. Lewis then breaks the only rule in the house to impress Tardy, opens the cabinet to find a book that will raise the dead! Lewis and Tarby sneak into the cemetery where the book leads them to a crypt and Lewis performs the spell bringing back Issac Izard from the dead!!! Izard, a zombie wizard now, tells Jonathan, Florence and Lewis about his plan to erase all of humanity when the clock stops ticking!

The House with a Clock in its Walls is a very good kids’ film but doesn’t bridge the age gap well. Jack Black is underwhelming as he tries to re-incarnate the famous magician Harry Blackstone. I hate to say it, because he is a kid, but Owen Vaccaro as his orphan nephew is not very good in the role. A fix for this film would be Having Cate Blanchett’s character as the aunt with Black being the crazy neighbor and possibly recasting Lewis with lain Armitage (Young Sheldon).

The Flickanalysis for the new flick “The House with a Clock in its Walls” only manages a 3/6 wizards. Take your kids to a matinee or bargain show this weekend, they will love it.
